Name: John Doe / The Joker
Door: "Door Pass"

Canon: Telltale Batman
Canon Point: Post s2

Age: unspecified; roughly early thirties
Appearance: "I don't want to end up like Bane! He was stabbed by some maniac!"

History: "Bruce is strong and smart and handsome you guys like really handsome it's nuts... uh, where was I going with this?"

Personality:

Positive

* Intelligent
[ John gathers a lot of information from the minimal input available to him; with little more than the Gotham news (TV channel and newspapers), and the word of fellow Arkham bound souls, he manages to produce wildly accurate deductions about the city and people around him. In particular, his fixation leads him to a certain individual, of whom John learns quite a bit about despite his very limited resources.

He also knows how to network connections; in Arkham, John knew who to talk to, what to say, and how much to say in order to get the desired results. He made friends with a naive but well meaning doctor, but also made sure the other patients knew better than to cross him. He used both friendliness and fear to leverage his situation to his favor. Outside of Arkham, he seems quite tactical in exactly what information he shares with who, and when.

And in most (but not every) situation, John usually understands far more than he lets on. In one scene, he asks Harley what a certain object is (an EMP) and in the next scene, he knows exactly how to use it. I believe this false ignorance is another clever strategy to get others to underestimate him; yet another example of John using his wits to his advantage.]

* Loyal
[ When John decides to be loyal to someone, it tends to be an incredibly unbreakable bond. Since my version of Bruce Wayne was always nicer to him, trusted him and so on, John learned about the importance of substantial relationships and is thusly remorseful about failing at trying to be Batman's sidekick. After battling Batman and ending up back in Arkham, John still keeps a picture of him and Batman, and when Bruce comes to visit him, John is extremely happy. This loyalty is far more genuine than his 'loyalty' to Harley, which is sometimes just for appearances. ]

* Good Intentions (?)
[ All John ever wanted was to be like Batman. The situation spun horribly out of control, but John didn't start with the intention to be a villain. He wanted to be a hero. He also wanted Bruce to care about him, which isn't exactly an evil desire in and of itself, either. At the end of his climax chapter he says 'I really wanted to be a hero... I just... can't' and you can hear that he's disappointed with how he messed everything up. And while he does often play dumb, there are some social cues and things he doesn't understand. When he gives Bruce a 'Get Well Soon!' card at his friend's funeral, he actually gets genuinely upset with himself if Bruce reacts badly. In that case, I feel like it's clear he really was trying to be a good friend. He's just. Lived in Arkham all his life leave him be. ]

Negatives

* Sadistic
[From the very beginning John shows a lot of pleasure whilst inflicting pain onto others. In the extremely brief time Bruce spends with him in Arkham, John brutalizes two men and starts a riot. When he’s released from Arkham and free in the city, he shows a severe fascination with explosives, and later adopts them as part of his weapons arsinel (which includes switchblades and throwing knives). He is undeniably gleeful while stabbing Bane nearly to death, and only stopped because of Batman’s interference. He delights in carnage and bloodshed, this inclination inevitably leading him to full fledged murder.]

* Obsessive
[ John can get really fixated on people to the point of becoming a bit stalker-y. He's attracted to brutality and violence, and attaches himself to people who embody those things. Through season two you get to see his obvious obsession with Harley Quinn, and also his (much more severe) obsession with Bruce Wayne. In my version, John casually mentions that he's been clipping Bruce's picture from the paper for years, which is far before they ever met in person. He also likes to get into the headspace of people he likes, being inspired by whatever darkness he finds in others. ]

* Manipulative
[ John constantly uses his genius level intellect for the manipulation of others. His tactics include deception, bluffing, gaslighting, intimidation, and simply playing dumb. He would rather people underestimate him, because it makes them drop their guard. For example, in one scene he says 'hey what's this shiny thing?' in reference to an EMP, like he has no idea what it is. Then in the next scene when Bruce is in danger, John suddenly knows exactly how to use the EMP to his advantage. Obviously he knew what it was all along, it's just a way to obfuscate how smart he actually is. Additionally, there's a notable shift in John's character from season one (where he is in Arkham) to season two (where he's in Gotham) and I interpret this as a kind of chameleon mechanism. Acting too 'sane' in Arkham would have made him a target, so he calibrated his behavior accordingly. He knew how to intimidate the other inmates, but also how to smooze the right members of the staff. When he was out in Gotham, his behavior became uncertain because he'd never left the asylum before. Some of it is certainly him genuinely having no idea what the hell to do and just not understanding social cues, but also, I feel like he plays that up more than he needs to, so again, people get a skewed perception of him. ]
